Pickup truck ads that is.
I mean sure, some of them are interesting, but truthfully? They are all all equally terrible to anything we mock today, even “real people” ads.

Nah man, the like a rock commercials actually work. As a Yurrupean I don’t even understand this pickup fad, but Bob Seeger makes me want to buy one instantly.

Thats not to say a winner didn’t sneak through every now and again, but it was the exception.

So this kind of begs the question:
Which “truck stunt” is the most ridiculous?
Pulling the space shuttle? Dropping four tons of stone from 30 feet?

With one exception:

my vote goes to the tundra ads

It easy to understand there’s a big bed in the back where you can haul everything you could afford before you spent all your money on a truck.

Well, to be honest, it’s 98% Bob Seeger and 2% the trucks. Opel did a similar trick in the 90s when they used the guitar riff from Clapton’s Layla.

Don’t forget Toby Keith.

Agreed. A lot of ramps and obstacles.
Even though this isn’t a stunt it always bothered me:
Which one is heavy duty?
I dunno. How about one that’s not 5 lugs?
![]() 07/06/2017 at 15:31 |

wow...that was terrible. Im pretty sure my memory deliberately chose not to store that.

Toyota is funny about its lugs. Some are 6 some are 5 and I can’t make heads or tails as to the logic of which one gets which. Their SUV’s mostly have 6 (my land cruiser 80, my gx470, the current gx and 4runner, fjc, etc), while some get 5 (the 100 series and 200 series land cruiser, sequoia). Best I can work out the larger 5 lugs must be the stronger choice. I mean its all about clamping loads not number of lugs, right?

Yeah, I can’t tell you how many of those I saw back in the day. Plus in Texas, because, well, Texas, Keith did a special one for the Texas Edition trucks and he’d look all extra tough and look directly at the camera and nod while saying “Ferd is the best in Texas.”

Yes but at least these show a vehicle running and moving under its own power.

Unless it rains... or you have to stop somewhere and then it sits in the open for everybody to help themselves to it.

Exception:

Not a problem as the bed is empty because you spent everything on the truck.

Those MPG ratings are absolutely ludicrous.
![]() 07/06/2017 at 15:57 |

they never tell you its for 55 mph speed limits...on a 100 hp engine...and they lied also.

No manbuns and bad mammajammas, no business in the front party in the back, no Audi-Tesla hybrids, I’ll take the truck ads.

Downhill, with a tailwind in neutral.

With no accessories.
Because everybody disconnects the serpentine belt and alternator for long hauls.

Don’t forget cost. The most expensive F150 in 1982 was about $10k, or $25k in 2017 $$$. The average income at that time was $19k. The most expensive current version is ~$70k, with average income at $53k.
So, the cost of a top trim F150 has gone from roughly 50% of average income to roughly 130%. When people say trucks have gotten expensive, they aren’t exaggerating.
Obviously they have improved significantly over time as well.

You certainly get more for your money though. I mean they are still a complete ripoff and if you are paying full sticker for said truck then you obviously don’t value your money like I do but remember even the fanciest features then were “color coded carpets” and “vanity mirrors”. That being said, you aren’t at all wrong with the craziness of truck prices.

I don’t know. This one is OK. Especially the second take.

Not necessarily true on trucks from the mid 80s on. I had an 85 K10 Silverado that was almost as loaded as the average Caprice of the time. (“Deluxe” Cloth interior, power windows, locks, cruise, tilt, AC)
Things started getting squirrelly in the 1990s though.
Crusty has a decent list of options for 1995 (F150). Extended cab XLT, 4x4, 5.0, towing package with rear sway bar, 3.31 gears, 265/75/15 tires, automatic hubs, air, cruise, tilt, cloth interior, am/ fm/cassette, power windows/locks, bucket seats with power lumbar. Sticker price was in the $28,000 range. (I forgot where I put the damn sticker!)
Median income was around $50k in 1995?

Median income depends on if you go by actual $$$ or inflation adjusted $$$.

NSFW?
I always wondered if that first ad could be considered some kind of t-boning. . .
